Hospital Bag Essentials: Preparing for Baby’s Arrival

When it comes to preparing for labor, one of the most important tasks on your to-do list is packing your hospital bag. You don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute when you’re already feeling overwhelmed, so it’s a good idea to prep ahead of time. Having everything ready ensures you’ll have the essentials for both you and your baby when the big day arrives.

In Australia, the healthcare system is pretty good. You will be supplied things like nappies and wipes so there’s no need to stuff your bag with unnecessary items like that, unless you prefer to use your own.

Here I have created a comprehensive list of all the things you will need to have prepared for during that stay in the hospital to make both you and baby more comfortable. Having a baby is hard work, and it’s just as important to look after yourself and allow your body to heal properly, so that you can focus on enjoying that time with your new little bundle of joy.

For You: Mum’s Hospital Bag Essentials

1. Comfortable Clothing

It’s important you feel comfortable both during and after delivery. You may only be in hospital for the day, or you may spend more time there but either way, I would recommend you have with you a minimum of 3 changes of clothes to help you feel clean and comfortable during your stay.

You want to pick clothes that are suitable for the temperature (noting that most hospital rooms run on the colder side), loose-fitting and breathable. You definitely don’t want to feel restricted or uncomfortable in any way whilst lying down in a hospital bed cuddling or feeding your newborn.

It’s also important to have a variety of options. Although hospital pump their AC’s, breastfeeding can also make you quite hot, so have singlets and light t shirts on offer as well as warmer clothes. The last option you have to consider, is what you want to wear during delivery. If you get an epidural, you’ll end up in a hospital gown anyway. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to pick something loose, comfortable and flowy.

3 Pack Nursing Tops

If you are planning on breastfeeding, comfortable nursing tops are an essential. You want easy access, as you’re going to be one handed a lot of the time! These tops are made of good quality material and last you a really long time. They are soft, lightweight and not see-through. They look like regular t-shirts and can be worn well after your breastfeeding journey. Definitely a must-have for the hospital bag!

Maternity/Nursing Pajama Set

Even if you think you’re only going to be there for the day, it’s ALWAYS a good idea to have pyjamas on hand just in case. These pyjamas are perfect, whether or not you are nursing, as they button down for easy access, are soft, comfortable and made of a beautiful silk satin material. What’s more is they are flattering on the body, making you feel like a million bucks while lying in a hospital bed.

MomCozy Nursing Bra

A nursing bra is a hospital bag staple if you are planning on breastfeeding. You need a bra that is soft, comfortable and has easy access. One without an underwire, such as this, is ideal for the ultimate comfort.

This MomCozy nursing bra is made of beautiful, high-quality materials. It is breathable, soft and stretchy with in-built padding and is incredibly flattering on the body. This bra is very popular for a reason, it’s a must-have for your hospital bag, throughout your breastfeeding journey, and onwards!

2. Footwear

  • Thongs are another absolute essential for showering whilst you’re in hospital! Yes, they clean the floors but you can never be too careful. They are great for just chucking on and wearing whilst walking around or jumping in the shower, and if you just buy a super cheap pair you can chuck them out once you’re done.
  • Slippers are a great option too for wearing around the hospital when you aren’t planning on getting your feet wet. They will help keep your feet clean, cozy and warm and are easy to slip on and off when you need to get up and about. I love these FamilyFairy Open Toe Slippers as they are made with soft, comfortable memory foam, are super cute and stylish and machine-washable! They look luxurious but have a very affordable price point.

A very important part of your hospital stay is your hygiene. You want to feel clean and comfortable, and if you’re sorted, you can then put all of your focus into your baby. This three-piece set of clear toiletry bags are perfect for filling with all of the personal care items you will need for your stay, including but not limited to:

  • A toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap, skincare, lip balm, makeup, and any other daily essentials will make you feel more refreshed during your hospital stay. Hospitals often provide basic toiletries, but bringing your own will help you feel more comfortable.

1. Maternity Underwear and Pads

  • After birth, you’ll need heavy-duty pads for postpartum bleeding, so pack a few in your bag, I’d recommend 2-3 packets! The ones they give you in hospital are not great so you’ll definitely want some of your own! You’ll also want comfortable maternity underwear that’s high-waisted and won’t irritate your recovery area. Though a little controversial, disposable underwear/adult nappies are ideal, and also super comfy during that postpartum stage in hospital. Don’t knock them until you try them!!
  • Perineal Cooling Pads are another essential, if you are expecting a natural delivery. There’s every chance you’ll need stitches, and that area will be very tender and sore for some time after giving birth. Perineal cooling pads are a lifesaver for getting you through that first week or two. They provide you with amazing relief and allow you to get around a bit easier!

2. Phone, Charger, and other Electronics

  • It might seem like an obvious one, but you don’t want to forget these things! You’ll want to keep in touch with family and friends, take photos, and possibly even listen to music during labor. Make sure you pack your phone, charger, and any other electronics you may need to stay connected and entertained during your stay.

3. Breast Pads

  • If you plan to breastfeed, breast pads are a must!! They absorb any leakage, which will be a-plenty, especially in the first few days!! These New Beginning Disposable Nursing Pads will be your best friend in hospital. They are soft, highly absorbent and hypo-allergenic, meaning they won’t cause any irritation to your already sensitive nipples. You will go through a TON of these in the first few days (and months!), so I would recommend stocking up. For me, I found it best to have disposable and reusable on hand so I always had spares when I needed them!

4. Snacks and Drinks

  • You may not be wanting snacks during your labour, but you will most certainly appreciate them after, so it’s a good idea to pack a variety of options, healthy and unhealthy- you need to treat yourself after all your body has endured!
  • Also don’t forget to bring a refillable water bottle. This Owala Freesip insulated water bottle is a great option. It’s made of quality stainless steel, comes in a variety of colours and sizes, and keeps your water cold for up to 24 hours, so it’s perfect for your hospital bag.

5. Document Checklist

  • Don’t forget your ID, Medicare card, Private Health cards, and any forms the hospital asks for. Keeping these in one place will save time when you check-in.

Baby Essentials: What to Pack for Your Newborn

1. Baby Clothes

  • You really don’t need to pack much for baby during your hospital stay. One or two outfits for your baby’s first photo ops and the journey home, plus a couple of spare onesies, and some socks will be plenty enough.
  • Make sure to bring both short-sleeved and long-sleeved options depending on the weather. Remember, babies can’t regulate their body temperatures as newborns, so it’s important to dress them appropriately. And don’t forget a cute hat for their first introduction to the outside world! Below are some of my favourite, but simple essentials for newborns:

Bonds Baby Wonderbodies Long Sleeve Bodysuit- 2 pack

You really can’t go wrong with a Bonds suit! These Bonds Wonderbodies long sleeve suits are perfect for layering, or even just on their own for those early days. Their quality is beautiful compared to other cheap onesie brands, they are super soft, stretchy and made of pure cotton. Pair with some leggings, socks and a cute little beanie and they make the perfect little outfit!

Bonds Baby Wonderbodies Singletsuit – 2 pack

Similar to the ones above, these are another great option to have for your hospital stay. They are perfect for popping on over bub’s nappy for the warmer weather, and layering or wrapping a blanket around them for the cold! It’s definitely important to have both short and long sleeve options, and don’t forget to have a couple of different sizes on hand too! Some babies go straight from birth to size 000, and others might be size 0000 or even size 00000! So it’s always better to be prepared.

2. Blankets and Swaddles

  • Your little one will need something cozy to wrap up in. Pack a soft swaddle/sleep sack, or two. Hospitals provide blankets, but it’s nice to have something familiar from home to comfort your baby.

3 Pack Organic Baby Swaddle Sleep Sacks

Trust me when I say you don’t want to be trying to figure out how to wrap a muslin wrap or swaddle in the middle of the night, it is hard work! These baby sleep swaddle sacks are much more convenient, quick and easy to use. They are snug, made of pure cotton, and can be put on in four easy steps. They are also hip-friendly according to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, so you can rest assured your baby is safe and comfortable.

3. Baby Bottles (if you’re bottle-feeding)

  • If you plan to bottle-feed, bring a couple of bottles with pre-measured formula. While hospitals often provide these items, it’s good to have your preferred brand on hand. These Pigeon SofTouch 3 Baby Bottles are made for newborns, with their soft, nipple-like teats and Air Ventilation System to support milk flow and reduce colic. They are also BPA and BPS free, so you know you’re giving your newborn the best.

4. Car Seat

  • Though not a ‘hospital bag’ item per se, it’s important to ensure you’ve got a properly installed car seat, as you can’t leave the hospital without one. I would recommend installing this weeks or even months in advance, and double check it’s installed correctly so you’re ready to go upon bub’s arrival.

The Mother’s Choice Convertible Car Seat is a practical, safe and durable car seat for newborns up to 4 years old. It is easy to install, clean and super comfortable for baby. It is a narrow car seat which allows you to fit three in the back of the car and has both forward and rear facing available for optimal safety through your baby’s growth stages.

5. Clothing – extras

  • Last but not least, don’t forget a couple of pairs of socks for bub, and a beanie or two, particularly for leaving hospital if you’ve got a winter baby!

Bonus Tips for Prepping Your Hospital Bag

  • Pre-pack Early: While the timing of labor can be unpredictable, pack your hospital bag at least a few weeks before your due date. You never know when you’ll need it!
  • Personal Touch: Include a few small, comforting items like a favorite pillow, a good book, or a relaxing essential oil (if allowed) to make your hospital stay feel more like home.
  • Make a Checklist: The excitement of labor can make you forget things, so check your list twice to ensure you’re packing everything you need.
  • Don’t Overpack: You won’t need everything you might think—just the essentials for you and your baby. Keep your bag streamlined and focus on the basics.

Packing your hospital bag doesn’t have to be a stressful task. Though I have provided you plenty of options- remember, less is more! And anything you leave out, someone will be able to come and get for you from home. This list of essentials will ensure you have everything you need to make your hospital experience more comfortable and enjoyable. The most important thing is that you’re prepared, so you can focus on what matters most—welcoming your baby into the world!
